Cooking with CBD oil

Since the arrival of CBD on the world markets, people have been trying to find the best way to take it. Oil drops, vapes and even contained within popular drinks such as coffee and bottled water! However, cooking with CBD is something that is starting to become more and more popular and at Lucid Hemp we love it!

Full spectrum CBD has so many benefits when taken, so how can we combine good food and the amazing properties of this product? Well, CBD is generally known to have a slightly bitter taste, so sugary or chocolatey dishes are the logical options. We did find however, that the taste of CBD works well in a variety of savoury dishes too!

In order for the cooking process to work, the CBD oil has to be infused with a fat or oil-based substance. CBD olive oil has become extremely popular and can be purchased off the shelf, but this is not the only option. We came across a number of recipes that also used alcoholic spirts such as vodka and rum for the CBD carrier as they act as a substitute for the fat component. If you are not a fan of cooking with alcohol, then not to worry! Butter, lard and coconut oil work great too!

Before we get into the recipes there’s a few key points that you need to know first before you begin cooking with your CBD oil of choice;

  1. Temperature is key to the process! Getting the CBD oil to the right temperature will unlock more of the active components meaning that you get a great benefit from cooking the oil. However, if the temperature is too low, you won’t unlock the full benefit of the product, and if it is too high, the CBD oil will begin to evaporate (usually around 160-180 degrees Celsius).
  2. Begin with small amounts of the CBD oil before you have perfected your recipes. Using too much could potentially lead to bitter taste in the dish, and more importantly wasted CBD oil! Start with smaller dishes and work your way up!
  3. Refined CBD oils work best in the cooking process. We found that less refined oils leave a particularly unpleasant after taste in the dish which isn’t ideal. All that being said, if you are cooking a dish that has more powerful flavours naturally, then you may consider using less refined oils as they tend to contain more amino acids and vitamins than the refined oils. Although we would strongly recommend the former of the two.
  4. DON’T BE LAZY! Mix the CBD oil into the cooking process to feel the full benefits! Topping your dish with the oil once it has been plated will give you some of the desired effects but is certainly not as good as taking the time to cook with product.

So, with these key points in-mind, here are some of our favourite recipes which include CBD oil. With a special mention to the first recipe for CBD pancake to help you celebrate your Shrove Tuesday with a Lucid touch!

2 cups gluten-free flour
1/4 cup unrefined sugar
1/4 cup oil (melted coconut oil or sunflower)
2 to 2 1/2 cups almond/soya milk (we recommend any type of non-dairy milk)
2 tbsp ground flaxseed
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp ground cinnamon

Place everything in the blender (add 2 cups of milk to start with, then adjust) and mix until smooth. Use a spatula or a spoon to check that everything is well combined.
Cook the pancakes in a lightly oiled pan (allow the pan to become hot before pouring the batter). Cook for a few minutes until the mixture becomes bubbly, then flip over to cook the other side (this side will cook faster).

Repeat until the batter is finished. Set aside.
